MHS boys overwhelmed by Iowa City West field

IOWA CITY – Imad Amenzou held his own against an elite crop of runners, but an overwhelming level of competition stretched out the Marshalltown boys cross country team en route to a 12th place finish (281) at the Iowa City West Invitational Tuesday.

Amenzou covered the University of Iowa Ashton Cross Country Course in 17 minutes, 19 seconds to grab 16th. Sam Johnson came through next for the Bobcats in 18:21 to place 45th, while Hunter Barnard was 20 positions back in 19:08.

Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Mitch Pritts, rated No. 12 in 4A, outran the pack in 16:07 and was one of four Hawks to place in the top-7. Cedar Rapids Prairie, rated second in Class 4A, tallied a winning total of 46 points, while ninth-rated Iowa City West took runner-up in the field of 13.

Class 4A’s top-ranked runner, Daniel Gardarsson of Iowa City West, finished third overall in 16:21 – seven seconds behind Davenport Central’s Mason Tope – the fourth rated runner in 4A. Rated runners in 4A comprised the next four spots in the race.

Bettendorf (84) and Davenport Central (102), claimed third and fourth followed by a bevy of ranked teams. Class 4A No. 15 Muscatine (123) claimed fifth ahead of Class 3A No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier (145), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (200) and 3A No. 11 Mount Vernon-Lisbon (214).

Iowa City Regina, rated 11th in Class 2A, edged the Bobcats by three points and was the last of six teams to appear in last week’s state rankings.

Alex Mason clocked a time of 19:45 to take 75th and round out the Bobcats’ scoring quintet. Tony Smith (20:20) and Andrew Walker (20:26) also competed for MHS, placing 85th and 86th respectively.

The Bobcats will next compete on Oct. 10 at the Des Moines Hoover Invite in Ewing Park. Races get underway at 4:30 p.m.
