Adult male identified as murder victim

Police say an adult male was killed in Marshalltown Tuesday and additional charges will be filed in the case later today.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning, said Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper. The name of the victim is expected to be released later after his identity has been confirmed.

Two Marshalltown men are being held as material witnesses for the murder at 502 N. Fourth Ave.

Jeremy A. Gartin, 30, and Max E. Nelson, Jr. 55, are being held as material witnesses.

Gartin is also being held on a criminal charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

Nelson, the former publisher of the Marshall County Sun, was arrested on felony drug charges in May 2012. A trial in that case has been postponed several times.

Online court records show Gartin has a long felony criminal history including charges of willful injury, criminal mischief, possession of firearms and burglary.

Police say they were called to the residence about a suspicious death Tuesday morning. The death is still being investigated and evidence and information have been collected that confirms criminal action led to this death, police said.

No other people of interest are being sought in connection with this investigation.
