5-point game helps Carillo net league’s weekly honor

Juan Carillo was the man of the match Tuesday.

And it’s becoming a frequent occasion for the freshman forward.

Coming off a career-best five-point performance against Indian Hills Community College on Sept. 25, the Cordoba, Spain, native was named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Carillo is the second straight Tiger to earn the award after freshman John Krause attained the honor last week. Carillo tallied one goal and a career-best three assists against the Warriors in a 10-0 victory.

While the freshman was awarded the accolade prior to Tuesday’s game against Iowa Central Community College, he put himself on the fast track for the honor again next week. Carillo contributed two goals and an assist, including the golden goal in overtime to help the Tigers trump the Tritons 3-2.

Carillo leads the ICCAC with 26 points and eight assists and is second in the league with nine goals. The freshman has racked up 16 points in his last five games – all wins – for the Tigers (9-2-1, 5-1-0).

MCC rose to No. 16 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I poll and remain in the Receiving Votes category of the NJCAA Division I poll. The Tigers will host Iowa Western (11-0, 5-0), the top-ranked team in both polls, Saturday at 2 p.m. The Reivers handed the Tigers their lone conference loss of the season with a 3-0 victory in Council Bluffs on Sept. 11.

The polls were finalized on Tuesday afternoon, prior to MCC’s 3-2 overtime victory over Iowa Central. The Tigers have received votes in five of the six weeks of voting in both the NSCAA and NJCAA polls. MCC was last ranked inside the top 20 in the preseason poll where the Tigers came in at No. 16 in the NSCAA and No. 15 in the NJCAA.
