Local artists draw a crowd at annual Art Walk

Twenty local artists displayed their artwork at stores on Main Street during the annual Art Walk Thursday night.

Dozens of people visited downtown to meet artists, listen to live music, view paintings, jewelry, pottery and other types of art inside various shops.

Melynda Van Zee, an artist from Pella, displayed her paintings and jewelry at Sit N’ Sleep.

“I’ve enjoyed it very much,” Van Zee said.

Ann Bresler, an artist from Marshalltown, displayed Elegant Lass Jewelry inside City Centre. This is the third year she participated in the Art Walk.

“It’s nice of the businesses to sponsor us as artists,” Bresler said. “It’s a good opportunity for us to show our work other than at the farmers market.”

The spectators enjoyed the event too.

“I’ve come previous years and it’s always fun,” Marilyn Dodd said. “I like the format this year.”

Colette Kunkel, of Baxter, came with her friend from Florida. She said they were enjoying their time.

“This is awesome,” Kunkel said. “It’s really interesting and it’s nice to get to go in the shops, some I’ve never been in before, to see the artists. It’s really nice and friendly.”

DyAnne Henry, this year’s event chair, said the Art Walk had a good turnout.

“We’ve had a steady flow all night long,” Henry said. “It’s been a good night. It gives a chance for people to come out see the artist and visit with them personally. They get to learn how the artist does their work so that’s always nice.”

This is the fifth year the Art Walk has been held. Coinciding with the Art Walk was the final Farmers’ Market on Main.
