Smart is preseason pick for Big 12 Player of the Year

DALLAS – Big 12 Conference men’s basketball coaches have named Oklahoma State sophomore Marcus Smart as the conference’s preseason Player of the Year.

Every Big 12 coach except OSU’s Travis Ford selected Smart for the preseason honor. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Joining Smart on the preseason All-Big 12 team is his Cowboy teammate – Markel Brown. Also voted onto the preseason team are Isaiah Austin of Baylor, Cory Jefferson of Baylor, Melvin Ejim of Iowa State and Andrew Wiggins of Kansas.

Ejim led the Big 12 with 9.3 rebounds per game and 15 double-doubles last season. He also averaged 11.3 points and shot just over 50 percent from the field for the Cyclones.

Iowa State opens the season against UNC-Wilmington on Nov. 10.
