MCC netters claim 6th straight win at NIACC Tourney

MASON CITY – Playing without its best defensive player Ashley Salgado did not slow down the Marshalltown Community College volleyball team on Saturday.

The Tigers traveled to the North Iowa Area Community College Tournament and returned home with two victories, defeating both Dakota County Technical College and the Central College junior varsity in straight sets.

MCC defeated Dakota County 25-8, 25-10, 25-10 and then dispatched the Dutch 25-11, 25-2, 25-13.

Salgado, the team’s starting libero and the nation’s leader in kills, missed both games due to an AC sprain in her left shoulder.

She suffered the injury Thursday in a doubleheader at Central College. Salgado’s injury is considered to be minor but Tiger coach Chris Brees held her out for precautionary reasons.

The two wins for MCC pushes its latest win streak to six matches and improves the Tigers’ overall record to 16-12. It is only the second time since 2005 that the Tigers have won 16 matches in a season. Marshalltown’s last winning season was in 2005 when it went 27-21 but the Tigers also went 16-27 in 2010.

Freshman Meghann Cole led the Tigers in both victories.

Against Dakota County Technical College, Cole finished with 11 kills and seven digs, while setter Sam Hinrichs added 28 assists and three kills.

Miranda Smith chipped in 10 kills and 13 digs, while Alyssa Whitmore had 15 digs and Reeba Box contributed eight kills and eight digs. Whitmore filled in for Salgado at libero.

Cole’s 10 kills against the Central College junior varsity also was a team-high.

Smith added eight kills and 10 digs, while Box and Katelyn Yauslin both had six kills and Box also contributed eight digs.

Whitmore led the Tigers with 14 digs, while Emily Anker chipped in 11 digs. Hinrichs delivered 30 assists, had five kills and finished with five digs in the win.

The Tigers (16-12, 3-3) will next play at Ellsworth (8-14, 1-4) in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference matchup at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
