SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans claim title at Madrid Tourney
MADRID – Regrouping from a three-set loss in pool play, the West Marshall volleyball team rattled off three straight victories to capture the Madrid Tournament title Saturday.
The Trojans (13-19) swept CMB, 25-18, 25-10, in the finals following a 25-19, 22-25, 15-6 semifinal triumph over Van Meter.
West Marshall finished 2-1 in pool play opening with a 21-13, 21-17 victory over CMB, before falling to Colo-NESCO. The Royals won 21-16, 11-21, 15-13, though the Trojans came back with a 21-9, 21-8 rout of Colfax-Mingo.
Jennifer Davis led the Trojans’ attack with 32 kills and three blocks. Brandy Wilkey added 30 kills and Morgan Hopper had 27. Alarie Craven contributed 107 assists and 31 digs, while serving 47-of-47 with nine aces.
Claire Underwood recorded a team-best 44 digs to go with a 45-of-47 outing from the service line and eight aces. Blair Bailey connected on all 30 of her attempts on serve and Gabby Reyerson added five blocks.
West Marshall hosts Gladbrook-Reinbeck Tuesday in NICL West action on Parents Night. The Trojans will play the winner of CMB vs. Colfax-Mingo on Oct. 29 in State Center.
BCLUW goes 1-3 at Waterloo Columbus
WATERLOO – Tested by some large school foes, the BCLUW volleyball team posted a 1-3 record at the Waterloo Columbus Tournament Saturday.
The Comets swept Waterloo East, 21-16, 21-17, but couldn’t grab a game in their other three matches.
The host Sailors bested BCLUW 21-8, 21-18 and Class 2A No. 3 ranked Sumner-Fredericksburg posted a 21-7, 21-9 decision over the Comets.
Vinton-Shellsburg fended off the Comets by a 21-17, 21-11 margin.
Haley Veldhouse and Nicole Montgomery paced BCLUW at the net with 11 kills each and Hannah Sams had 10. Mallory Vawter and Kendall Scurr each recorded nine kills as Bobbi Paper dished out 27 assists and converted all 24 of her serves along with an ace. Olivia Callaway added a team-high 15 digs and four solo blocks. Montgomery had 11 digs and converted 18-of-19 service attempts with an ace. Scurr was 14-of-15 on serve including an ace and Nicolette Simpson converted all 13 of her service attempts to go with 18 assists.
The Comets (9-12) hit the road for a NICL West Division test against South Tama County Tuesday, before traveling to Aplington-Parkersburg Thursday. BCLUW will host its own tournament Oct. 12.
