Bobcat swimmers coast to win over Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE – Winning all but one event on Tuesday, the Marshalltown swim team raced past rival Fort Dodge in the pool Tuesday.

The Bobcats got multiple individual wins from Leah Barkema and went 1-2 in all three relays to best the Dodgers 135-50.

Barkema won the 100-yard freestyle in 57.07 seconds and then hit the wall first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.30.

Other individual winners on the night included Hayley Lillibridge in the 200 freestyle, Maggie Carnahan in the 200 individual medley, Chloe Kuehner in the 100 butterfly, Melisa Fonseca in the 500 freestyle, Therese Kuhlman in the 100 backstroke and Phoebe Lynk in 1-meter diving.

The 200 medley relay was won by the foursome of Emily Vest, Raechel Hannam, Emily Barske and DarC Vopava with a time of 2:04.93. The 200 freestyle relay was claimed by Hannam, Carnahan, Vopava and Vest and the 400 freestlye relay was won by Mikayla Wymore, Barkema, Vopava and Carnahan.

Fonseca also was second in the 200 freestyle, Vopava came in behind Carnahan in the 200 IM and Lillibridge finished runner-up to Barkema in the 100 freestyle. Kuhlman also was second in the 500 freestyle and Kuehner was runner-up to Barkema in the 100 breaststroke.

The MHS divers finished in the top three spots with Sabrina Price and Kaite Gassman finishing second and third, respectively. Lynk won the event with 192.25 points, while Price had 167.85 and Gassman finished with 149.15.

The runner-up team in the 200 medley relay was Carolina Freire-Vales, Barkema, Carnahan and Kuehner, the second place 200 freestyle relay team included Freire-Vales, Lillibridge, Fonseca and Kuhlman and the other second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay featured Morgan Van Staalduine, Kuehner, Lillibridge and Barske.

Elli Russell of Fort Dodge won the 50 freestyle in 28.51 to claim the Dodgers only win.

Marshalltown is next in action Saturday at the Johnston Invitational. Action in the pool begins at 9 a.m.
