SPORTS SHORTS: MHS youth football to be recognized

The players and coaches of the Marshalltown youth football program will be recognized at halftime of the Bobcat varsity football contest Friday night.

The Marshalltown Football League (MFL) and the Marshalltown Middle School program have been staples in the Marshalltown community, providing local youth with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of football while being taught lifelong lessons of teamwork, dedication and respect.

All players wearing their MFL or middle school jersey will be permitted into the game for free.

Marshalltown (0-6, 0-2) hosts Ankeny Centennial (3-3, 1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Leonard Cole Field in a Class 4A, Division 3 contest.

Central’s Sowers gains academic honor

PELLA – Marshalltown High School graduate Whitney Sowers was one of nine members of the Central College softball team named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s All-America Scholar-Athlete squad.

The honor is given to any player with a 3.5 grade-point average. Sowers, a sophomore sociology major, was the starting third baseman for the Dutch and a second-team all-Iowa Conference selection.
