Third-rated Trojans trample Mustangs
STATE CENTER – Class 2A No. 3-ranked West Marshall made quick work of its cross-county rival with five touchdowns in the first quarter to sprint past the Mustangs, 70-7, in District 7 football Friday.
Ducan Ferch racked up 218 yards and three touchdowns and Devin Chesler added another trio with two on the ground and a blocked punt recovery in the end zone as West Marshall (7-0, 4-0) extended its district win streak to 27. Ferch rattled off touchdown runs of 5, 30 and 59 yards, while Chesler dashed in from 9 and 50 yards on his two totes for the night. Elijah Streeter scored on a 5-yard scamper and 82-yard kickoff return and Nick Juel hauled in a 58-yard strike from Matt Van Metre.
Jarred Johnson padded his punt block with a 15-yard TD rumble, while Dale Hilleman had a team-high 15 tackles and Ferch recovered a fumble.
Nick Long got the Mustangs (0-8, 0-4) on the board with a score from two yards out in the third as West Marshall led 49-0 at halftime and scored the first 63 points of the game. Rafael Rodriguez converted nine of the Trojans’ 10 extra points, while Sam Sheer made the other.
The Trojans close their four-game homestand against Roland-Story next Friday, while the Mustangs entertain Nevada.
GMG 37, Iowa Valley 12
GARWIN – Snapping a two-game skid, the GMG football team came out firing from its bye week with 21-first quarter points in a 37-12 rout over Iowa Valley in Class A District 4 play.
Bridger Claasen completed 9-of-17 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, while Brock Fisher rambled for 152 yards and two scores on just nine carries and added a 34-yard reception.
Claasen connected with Austin Vaughn for a 60-yard touchdown on the Wolverines’ first play from scrimmage as GMG (4-3, 2-2) moved back above .500. Vaughn and Claasen hooked up later in the frame on a 26-yard strike and Fisher added touchdown runs of 46 and 75 yards in the victory – the Wolverines’ first since Sept. 13. Vaughn finished with 119 yards on four catches and 51 yards on 12 carries. Bryce Newcomb hauled in two grabs for 63 yards.
Iowa Valley (1-7, 0-5) cut the deficit to 21-6 early in the fourth, before GMG responded with 16 unanswered. Vaughn tacked on a 23-yard field goal and Ryan Spurlin added a 2-yard TD plunge before the Tigers tacked on one more score en route to their seventh straight loss.
Alec Bovenmeyer led the GMG defense with 17 tackles, Lucas Catherwood had 10 stops and Dillon Slingluff made eight. Slingluff also had two catches for 20 yards.
The Wolverines travel for their final two regular season games starting with BCLUW Friday.
