MCC splits on opening day at DMACC tourney

BOONE – A three-game defeat only set back the Tigers momentarily.

The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team rebounded from a sweep against No. 2 nationally ranked Parkland College with a 3-1 victory over MCC-Longview in day one of the Des Moines Area Community College Invitational Friday.

The Tigers (17-14) claimed their seventh victory in nine matches heading into the second day of the invite.

Parkland, which entered with a 33-2 record, tamed the Tigers 25-16, 25-13, 25-20, as the Cobras claimed their fifth consecutive win in straight sets.

Alyssa Whitmore paced the Tigers defensively with a team-high 14 assists in the absence of Ashley Salgado. Katelyn Yauslin and Miranda Smith both recorded eight kills in MCC’s opening match.

The Tigers took the nightcap over MCC-Longview 25-13, 18-25, 25-23, 25-12. Smith and Yauslin paced the Tigers with 13 and 12 kills respectively. Smith raised her team-high season total to 254, while Yauslin is second on the squad at 241. The two rank fifth and sixth respectively in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.

Whitmore was the only Tiger to register double-figures in digs with 18, her ninth straight match with double-digit dig totals. Sam Hinrichs led the Tigers against Longview with 38 assists.

MCC returns to action for day two of the DMACC Invite with a pair of matches. The Tigers take on South Suburban College, a team that received votes in this week’s NJCAA Division II poll, at 8 a.m. before battling Highland Community College at 2 p.m.
