Big local group prepares for China trip
A total of 93 people are traveling as part of the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce-sponsored trip to China next week. The group will fly out of Seattle on Monday for the 10-day trip.
“A lot of people are calling it the trip of a lifetime,” said Lynn Olberding, vice president of the chamber. “They are very excited. A lot of people are saying China was on their bucket list.”
During the trip, the group of community and chamber members will visit seven of the top 10 tourist attractions in China, including the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square.
“This is meant to be a cultural experience,” Olberding said.
Since many on the trip are business people, they will also get to learn about China’s place in the global economy.
“This is for a better understanding that China has been more and more involved in the global economy,” Olberding said.
The group will spend several days in Beijing and Shanghai.
While in the Beijing area, a group of 35 people will visit an Emerson plant.
“It’s kind of nice to have that Marshalltown connection,” Olberding said.
The group will have several interpreters and will work with a travel company in China to help them get around.
Olberding said the chamber set out to try to get 30 people to go on the trip, so 93 was much better than they ever imagined.
“We were blown away by the response,” Olberding said.
