Jeremy Gartin pleads not guilty
A Marshalltown man accused of shooting and killing a local man has pleaded not guilty.
Jeremy A. Gartin, 30, of Marshalltown, entered a not guilty plea on Monday. Judge James Ellefson set a jury trial for Dec. 9.
Gartin is charged with the Oct. 1 murder of David Warnell, of Garwin. Police initially charged Gartin with first-degree murder and carrying a concealed weapon. The Marshall County Attorney’s office later added charges for abuse of a corpse and first-degree theft.
Police discovered Warnell’s body at Gartin’s home, 502 N. Fourth Ave. The body was mutilated post-mortem, police said.
Court documents indicate the shooting was a result of a drug deal dispute.
Max E. Nelson Jr., of Marshalltown, is also charged in the crime with accessory after the fact, abuse of a corpse and first-degree theft. He pleaded not guilty to the charges last week.
