Barkema leads MHS at CIC swim meet

PLEASANT HILL – Backed by two top-10 performances from senior Leah Barkema, the Marshalltown girls swim team took ninth out of 10 teams at the Central Iowa Conference swim meet at Southeast Polk on Thursday.

Barkema was third in the 100-yard freestyle and ninth in the 100 breaststroke as the Bobcats scored 124 points. They beat Fort Dodge’s 50 points and finished three points behind host Southeast Polk.

Barkema’s time in the 100 freestyle was 55.73 seconds. Maddie Gehrke of Waukee won the event in 53.61, while Barkema was just .65 seconds off second place. Gehrke also won the 50 freestyle.

Barkema was one of three Bobcats who scored points in the breaststroke. Raechel Hannam was fifth overall with a time of 1:11.32, while Barkema was ninth and senior Chloe Kuehner took 11th.

Kuehner also was 12th in the 200 individual medley, while Therese Kuhlman was 16th in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, and Hayley Lillibridge was 15th in the 500 freestyle.

The Bobcats were sixth in the 200 medley relay as the foursome of Kuehner, Hannam, Kuhlman and Barkema hit the wall in 1:56.83.

MHS also was eighth in the 400 freestyle relay and ninth in the 200 freestyle relay. The groups in those races included Hannam, Maggie Carnahan, Lillibridge and Melisa Fonseca in the 200 and Barkema, Lillibridge, Kuhlman and Fonseca in the 400.

The Bobcats came into Thursday in sixth place after scoring four points in Tuesday’s diving portion of the meet. Phoebe Lynk led the Bobcats in diving with a 14th place finish.

Ames went 1-2 in diving and finished off the conference championship Thursday with a dominant performance in the pool. The two-time defending state champions won four individual events, led by two wins from Sara Bentley.

The Bobcats are off until the regional meet at West Des Moines Valley on Nov. 2. Action in the pool kicks off at noon.
