Tigers lock up 2-seed after shutout of Tritons
FORT DODGE – John Krause scored two goals and Julian Pena stopped five shots to earn the shutout as the Marshalltown Community College soccer team locked up the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA Division I Region XI Tournament with a 2-0 win over rival Iowa Central on Saturday.
Krause scored in the 15th minute off an assist from Juan Carrillo to put the Tigers up 1-0 and then put the victory away with a second-half goal in the 55th minute. Jaime Agujeter was credited with the assist on the second tally.
The victory locks down the second seed in the upcoming regional tournament, which kicks off Tuesday.
The second-seeded and 19th ranked Tigers (14-3-1, 10-2) will host seventh seeded and No. 17 ranked Dakota County at 3 p.m. Iowa Central (12-6, 8-4) hosts Scott (3-14, 2-10) in its first-round game while fourth-seeded NIACC (5-10, 4-8) hosts fifth-seeded Indian Hills (4-13, 2-10) in the other matchup. Top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 1 Iowa Western (18-0, 11-0) received a bye and will play the Indian Hills-NIACC winner.
First-round winners advance to the semifinals at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines at noon Saturday. The finals also will be at Cownie and kick off at noon Sunday.
