Turkey Valley turns back BCLUW; Meskwaki falls
JACKSON JUNCTION – Turkey Valley turned away BCLUW’s first foray into the state playoffs since 2003, prolonging the Trojans’ fifth straight postseason appearance with a 46-14 victory in Wednesday night’s Class A opening-round game.
Turkey Valley ran for 338 of its 369 total yards of offense, getting a season-best 100 yards from Eric Buchendahl on just eight carries. Senior tailback Luke Keunnen went over 1,000 yards for the year, adding 89 yards with three touchdowns, and Justin Kime had 85 yards and two rushing scores.
The Trojans (7-3) also had three takeaways and no turnovers to prevent the Comets (5-5) from staying alive in the postseason.
BCLUW finished with 301 yards of offense, getting 250 of them through the air. Senior quarterback Conner Ubben was 15-for-25 passing for 235 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Mitch Miller also completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Sams, who ended with six grabs for 99 yards and two scores.
Junior Will Garber had a career-high 110 receiving yards on four catches.
Nine of Ty Runge’s team-leading 13 tackles were solo stops, while Ubben finished with 12 tackles and Luke Asche had 10.
Turkey Valley travels to face sixth-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck in Monday’s second round.
Adair-Casey 59, Meskwaki 20
ADAIR – Five of Traeton Jensen’s seven pass completions went for touchdowns as fourth-ranked Adair-Casey clubbed Meskwaki in the opening round of 8-Man state football playoffs Wednesday night.
The Bombers (10-0), making their third straight postseason appearance, totaled just 358 yards of total offense but capitalized on four turnovers, returning one fumble for a touchdown.
Clayton Plowman had 11 carries for 119 yards and two touchdowns for Adair-Casey, while Emmitt Wheatley finished with three catches for 85 yards and two scores. Jensen ended up 7-for-8 passing for 159 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.
No Meskwaki statistics were available.
Adair-Casey hosts Twin Cedars (10-1) in Monday’s second round.
