Bobcats’ Whaley all-CIC second-team volleyball
The future of the Marshalltown High School volleyball team turned out to be its present, too.
Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Whaley was named to the all-Central Iowa Conference second team and was a unanimous selection to the all-Northern Division squad as voted by league coaches.
Whaley was joined on the six-player all-Northern Division team by fellow sophomore outside hitter Leiah Paustian, who moved up from honorable mention selection a season ago.
Whaley led the Bobcats and ranked 19th in Class 5A with 279 kills and a 3.03 kills-per-set average. Paustian was second on MHS with 225 kills (2.42 kps) and 219 digs, while also leading the team with 33 service aces.
Earning second-team all-division honors were seniors Sharissa Stansberry and Lindsey Ricken. Stansberry, the libero, led the Bobcats with 249 digs (2.86 per set) and ranked fourth in the CIC North, while the setter Ricken was third in the division with 329 assists.
Seniors Amanda Hughes and Emily Rebik both received honorable mention. Hughes contributed 155 assists while Rebik was the team’s leader with 50 blocks – fifth-best in the division.
Marshalltown finished the season 14-22 overall and was second in the CIC North with a 2-1 mark.
