MCC men grounded by ranked CSI
OTTUMWA – The Tigers’ first major test of the season left them on the losing side Friday.
The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t catch up in a 104-79 loss to nationally ranked College of Southern Idaho on day one of the Reed Overhead Doors Classic at Indian Hills Community College.
The Golden Eagles, rated No. 13 in the NJCAA Division I preseason poll, scored the first six points of the contest while keeping the Tigers off the board in the opening three minutes. Despite controlling the offensive glass, MCC couldn’t capitalize on second opportunities and fell behind 23-13 as CSI struck from long-range.
Raheim Holloway tied his career-high with 17 points to lead the Tigers (1-1), including 11 in the first half as MCC trailed 43-31 at the break.
Getting a boost off the bench from Mike Rodriguez, the Tigers trimmed the deficit to eights points early in the second half. The Boston native replaced Holloway, who got into foul trouble after halftime, and finished with 11-second half points.
The Golden Eagles (3-0) spread their lead to 77-55 at the 11:23 mark and reached the century mark for the third straight game. Jamal Gatali finished with 14 points and Troidell Carter added 11. Merdic Green chipped in six points in the first half, while Terrell Clyburn also provided an early spark.
MCC returns to Ottumwa today to take on Mid-Michigan CC for day two of the tournament at Indian Hills. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
