Wisconsin women clobber Drake, 66-41
MADISON, Wis. – Drake’s first road trip of the season yielded its first loss, too, as the Bulldog women’s basketball squad was shot down by Wisconsin, 66-41, on Sunday at the Kohl Center.
Wisconsin 6-foot-3 junior forward Michala Johnson had a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds as the Badgers opened their season with a win. Dakota Whyte added a game-high 18 points and Taylor Wurtz had 13 more for the home team.
Drake, two days after a season-opening victory over former Missouri Valley Conference foe Creighton, shot just 4-for-21 from 3-point range and got pounded on the boards for its first loss.
No Bulldog scored in double figures as the team shot a paltry 14-for-54 (26 percent) from the field and lost the rebounding battle 49-34.
Ashley Bartow, Carly Grenfell and Lizzy Wendell had eight points apiece to pace Drake (1-1).
“We didn’t make shots, we missed a few shots early, and we stopped taking them and stopped flowing into what we do best,” Drake coach Jennie Baranczyk said. “We played a good home basketball team today in Wisconsin. They had great balance in their scoring.”
Iowa native Morgan Paige, a senior guard from Marion, contributed seven points, four rebounds and an assist for Wisconsin.
Drake goes back out on the road Saturday, meeting Colorado State in a 1 p.m. contest in Fort Collins, Colo.
