Custer is Iowa State’s one new recruit
AMES – Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg announced the signing of four-star point guard Clayton Custer Friday to a National Letter of Intent for the 2014-15 basketball season.
Custer, a 6-foot-1 freshman from Overland Park, Kansas, is a two-time first-team all-state Class 6A pick in Kansas after leading Blue Valley Northwest to back-to-back state titles.
Custer led his team to a 25-0 record and a second straight state title in 2013, averaging 22.2 points, 2.1 steals and 5.3 assists per game. He also shot 59 percent from the field, 39 percent from behind the arc and 80 percent from the line. The three-year starter also had offers from Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and is rated No. 90 nationally by Rivals.com.
Iowa signs Ellingson, Uhl
IOWA CITY – Iowa has signed prep guard Brady Ellingson and forward Dominique Uhl to National Letters of Intent.
Ellingson, a 6-foot-4 guard from Sussex, Wis., averaged 21.3 points a game as a junior last season. He shot 48 percent from 3-point range and was named first-team All-State.
Uhl, a 6-foot-9 forward from Point Pleasant Beach High in N.J., averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds a game last year.
Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says Ellingson is a “cerebral” player and that Uhl has tremendous ball-handling skills for a player his size.
Panthers add Lohaus
University of Northern Iowa head men’s basketball coach Ben Jacobson announced the signing of Iowa City West guard Wyatt Lohaus to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Panthers.
Lohaus, a 6-foot-2 guard, has helped lead Iowa City West to back-to-back Class 4A state championships and consecutive undefeated seasons (52-0). The North Liberty native earned a spot on the 2013 state tournament all-tournament squad and was a first-team all-state pick as a junior after earning a second-team selection as a sophomore. Lohaus averaged 13.7 points, five assists and 1.9 steals per game last season, while shooting 51.8 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from behind the arc.
Drake signs 5 players
DES MOINES – Drake coach Ray Giacoletti announced his first recruiting class Wednesday, a five-player group that includes a pair of Iowans.
Iowa Falls-Alden High forward Casey Schlatter and center Kory Kuenstling of Dunkerton headline the class of players who have signed with the Bulldogs.
Schlatter averaged 25.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game as a junior last season and was a first-team All-State pick. The 6-foot-11 Kuenstling scored nearly 16 points a game last year.
Point guard Reed Timmer of New Berlin, Wis., and a pair of Illinois players, C.J. Rivers and Ore Arogundade, round out the 2014 class for Drake.
