SPORTS SHORTS: Ackley’s Ubben earns academic honor
CEDAR?FALLS – AGWSR grad Macy Ubben was one of two members of the University of Northern Iowa volleyball squad recently selected to the Capital One Academic All-District volleyball team, representing District 6.
The Ackley native and senior outside hitter joined senior middle blocker Shelby Kintzel on the team. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or important reserve and hold a 3.0 or better grade point average. Ubben and Kintzel are now candidates for Academic All-America honors.
Ubben, the 2008 Times-Republican All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year, has a 3.93 GPA in biology and biochemistry. The former Cougar leads the Panthers with 3.06 kills per set and averages 3.29 digs per set – second on the team. She also averaged .76 blocks per set and earned this honor for the first time in her career, while it’s the second for Kintzel.
Kintzel holds a 4.0 GPA in elementary education, mathematics and literary education. She is currently sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference in hitting percentage (.323). The Mount Vernon grad also averages 2.73 kills and .88 blocks per set for the Panthers.
Tickets for NCAA Tourney now on sale
IOWA CITY – Tickets for the 2014 NCAA Division I women’s basketball first and second rounds, hosted by the University of Iowa, are now on sale for UI women’s basketball season ticket holders.
Tickets go on sale to the general public Dec. 2.
Iowa’s first- and second-round games will be played March 23 (4:30 and 7 p.m.) and March 25 (8:30 p.m.).
Iowa was one of 16 sites chosen to host the opening two rounds and one of eight selected to host in back-to-back years.
A special advanced sales rate runs until Jan. 1. All-session tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for youth (18 and under), UI students and seniors (50+).
Fans that purchase tickets prior to Jan. 1 will receive a free T-shirt with every ticket and a $10 gift card to use at Herky’s Locker Room. All-session tickets move to $30 and $18 respectively after Jan. 1.
Single-session tickets, available for purchase after Jan. 1., will be $18 and $13. Group tickets are also available for purchase after Jan. 1, with all-session rates (20 or more tickets) at $15 and single-session rates at $10.
