Marian Hayward Harvey, 99, of Marshalltown, Iowa, entered into eternal life at Villa del Sol in Marshalltown on November 14, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 18, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services Monday at First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice, 502 Plaza Heights Road in Marshalltown, 50158, or to the First Baptist Church designated for American Baptist Women’s Ministries, 700 East Olive in Marshalltown, 50158. The Main St. Chapel of Anderson Funeral Homes is in charge of the arrangements.
Marian was born on December 31, 1913, in Albia, Iowa, she was the second of eight children of John Thomas and Emma (Nelson) Hayward. Marian was looking forward to her 100th birthday next month.
She grew up on a farm near Centerville, Iowa, graduating from high school there in 1931. She attended Centerville Junior College and taught at Maple Grove Country School near Moravia, Iowa. Her marriage to Joe Harvey on July 25, 1935, took them to Ft. Dodge, Clinton, Des Moines and finally to Marshalltown in 1948.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church and served in various capacities. Her interests and activities in Marshalltown have centered around Twentieth Century Club, volunteering in the MMSC Auxiliary Gift Shop, and Entre Nous Club. From her early days of teaching, she then worked as a teller at the Fidelity Savings Bank, Marshalltown School Business Office and the Red Cross. She was an avid fan of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes!!
At the age of 92, Marian wrote a remarkable book filled with the memories of her life, family and world events she experienced. It was titled “Twas a Great Life and I’m Still Goin'”. Thus it is that her legacy will “Still be Goin'”!
Marian will be missed by two daughters, Jan (Daryl) Thake, Ann (Mills) Williams; a sister, Catherine Rehbein, along with grandchildren Lisa (Pat) Lujin, Jill Kilgore, Kirsten Williams, Joe (Cindi) Williams and great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Carson and Payton Lujin and Riley Kilgore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Harvey, and 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
