Bench play boosts Tiger men’s hoops to triumph
COUNCIL BLUFFS – Tyrese Hoxter’s 16 points led three Marshalltown Community College bench players in double figures Saturday and the Tiger men defeated Labette Community College, 75-68, during day-two action at the Hampton Inn-Holiday Inn Reiver Classic.
Hoxter, a freshman, scored his 16 points and grabbed three rebounds with four steals in 22 minutes of action, while freshman Marquise Cunningham added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds to help the Tigers move past the .500 mark on the season.
Freshman Guilherme Verardo chipped in 10 points as he hit half of the Tigers’ four 3-pointers on the day.
Marshalltown led 32-30 at halftime but managed to find some breathing room after shooting 54 percent from the floor and hitting 15-of-22 from the foul line in the second half. MCC took just three shots from the line in the first 20 minutes.
Hoxter led the way the line, hitting eight of his 10 attempts. Sophomore Raheim Holloway was 5-for-6 and finished with seven points and five assists in the win. Terrell Clyburn and Merdic Green also scored nine points apiece for the Tigers, who improved to 3-2 on the year.
The Tigers, who forced 19 turnovers in the win Saturday, will take a week off before heading to Indian Hills Community College for the Bowling RV Classic on Nov. 22-23.
MCC will face Missouri State-West Plains at 4:30 p.m. Friday and then take on Barton Community College at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
