Barbara J. Kondrath, 83

Barbara J. Kondrath, 83, of Fort Dodge, formerly of Marshalltown, passed away quietly on Monday, November 18, 2013 after a recent severe stroke and following illness.

A service honoring Barbara’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, with the Rev. Andrea Kraushaar and Rev. Ron Kitterman officiating. Entombment will be in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum. The visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Fort Dodge. A memorial fund will be established for a music scholarship in Barbara’s name.

Barbara J. (Johnson) Kondrath, the daughter of Charles F. and Florence A (Reifschneider) Johnson, was born October 30, 1930, in Marshalltown and was a resident of Marshalltown until moving to Fort Dodge. Barbara was a direct descendant of Fred L. Maytag of Maytag fame. She was an aspiring and gifted pianist who was accepted into the Julliard School of Music. She later declined and continued her formal music training at Cornell College. There she met her future husband, Andrew S. Kondrath of Oak Park, Ill. A gifted performer, both as a soloist and in duets for many years, Barbara was a dedicated and passionate educator in piano. She taught from her home and at Iowa Central Community College for over 65 years. She continued to teach at home after retiring from Iowa Central up to a few weeks before her passing, with many students advancing to a professional level. Many knew her for her bubbly, outgoing and sometimes flamboyant personality. She gave freely of her time to many organizations including being a board member of the Fort Dodge Symphony and Fort Dodge Choral Society. She was valued for many years as a consultant for the Iowa Arts Council and was involved in several social groups locally including the Red Hat Society and her church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two older brothers, Robert and Ernest Johnson. Passionate of her family she is survived by three sons, Christopher (Linda), Oak Park, Ill.; Jeffery (Ginger), Twin Lakes; Andrew (Lori), Spirit Lake; and one daughter Valerie Kientoff, Fort Dodge; She has six grandchildren, Jessica Kondrath, Los Angeles, Calif.; Heather Kientoff, Fort Dodge; Mitchell Kondrath, Cedar Rapids; Madison Holtapp, Pomeroy; Ryan Kondrath, Spencer; and Sean Kondrath, Spirit Lake; her former husband Andrew S. Kondrath and four great-grandchildren, Autumn Kientoff, Lexi Kientoff, Jaxson Howell and Adriana Howell.
