Reading skills have taken off
Ruben Mendoza wasn’t too fond of reading chapter books at the start of this school year. The Lenihan Intermediate School sixth grader was able to tap into subjects he liked and his reading has taken off in the past couple of months.
“He’s meeting his goal and surpassing it,” said Mendoza’s teacher, Shauna Smith.
Mendoza is involved in the English Language Learners program at Lenihan. He said the key to his growth in reading was finding subjects he had an interest in.
“Before, I didn’t like chapter books,” he said.
Smith feels the future is bright and is hopeful Mendoza can continue to improve.
“He is a bright young man with leadership potential,” Smith said.
