Iowa, ISU extend Cy-Hawk football
The Iowa-Iowa State football rivalry is not going anywhere any time soon.
Representatives from both schools announced that the annual Cy-Hawk Series game has been extended through 2021.
The joint announcement was made by Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard and Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta on Wednesday.
“We are pleased to have the contract extended through 2021,” said Barta. “In-state rivalries are an exciting part of college athletics, and you can feel a different energy across the state during the week of the Hawkeye-Cyclone matchup.”
The four-year extension begins in 2018 after the current Cy-Hawk contract expires in 2017. Iowa State will travel to Kinnick Stadium in 2018 and 2020, while Iowa State will host the Hawkeyes at Jack Trice Stadium in 2019 and 2021.
“We are excited to extend our contract with the University of Iowa in football,” Pollard said. “This game is very important to the residents of this state, and I am pleased both institutions are committed to continuing the rivalry. Rivalry games are great for college football.”
Iowa and Iowa State have played annually since resuming the series in 1977. The teams first met in 1894, and the Hawkeyes hold a 40-21 advantage in the series. Iowa also won the most recent game, 27-21, in Ames earlier this season.
“The annual contest with Iowa State is anticipated each year by fans of both programs,” Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz said. “With the changing of the conference schedules, we are happy this series will be continued without interruption.”
Iowa State does hold a 9-7 edge since 1998.
“The Iowa State-Iowa rivalry is ingrained in this state,” Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said. “It’s healthy for the state of Iowa, it’s healthy for both universities and we look forward to playing it every year.”
The Cyclones (2-9, 1-7) conclude their season at 3 p.m. Saturday at West Virginia. The game can be seen on Fox Sports 1.
Iowa (7-4, 4-3) will play Nebraska in the “Heroes Game” on Black Friday. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. and can be seen on ABC.
