State Center to host Christmas celebration
STATE CENTER – The holiday spirit is sure to spread in downtown State Center Friday for the annual Old-fashioned Christmas on Main celebration.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive on a horse-drawn trolley at 5 p.m. at the historic Watson’s Grocery Store to kick off the night activities on Dec. 6.
The downtown will be bustling with visitors to soak in the holiday season – and the accompanying decorations.
“We’re trying to make it look welcoming and warm,” said Marcia Quick, one of the organizers of the event.
Food will be offered at several places including a “pop up diner” at 132 W. Main Street. The diner will sell hot dogs and brats.
“We are raising money for the Center Street Depot project,” Quick said.
Music will also be a focal point of the evening as the Sweet Adelines will perform at 6:30 p.m. and the Marshalltown Mens Chorus at 7:15 p.m. both in the Community Hall.
The horse-drawn trolley will also offer free rides throughout the night around the downtown area.
Several other activities will take place including wine tasting, an art show, a chainsaw artist, business open houses, a dance program and more.
The event is organized by the State Center Development Association and State Center businesses.
Overall, Quick said this event is a way for shops to thank the customers for business and to usher in the holiday season in State Center.
“We are thanking customers for being loyal to State Center businesses,” Quick said.
