NT’s Youel gains elite all-Iowa Star

North Tama senior middle hitter Josie Youel led the Iowa Star Conference’s South Division in kills and service aces on her way to selection to the league’s season-ending elite team.

Youel was one of two unanimous selections to the all-South Division squad, joined by fellow senior Kaitlyn McGarvey of Don Bosco. Youel and McGarvey were the only South representatives on an elite team dominated by North Division standouts Tripoli and Class 1A state champion Janesville.

Youel was a second-team selection as a sophomore. She became the Redhawks’ first elite team honoree since Aryn Isenhower in 2011. McGarvey is a two-time elite pick.

Colo-NESCO senior middle hitter Caitlyn Riese earned her fourth consecutive first-team honor after sharing the Iowa Star lead in blocks and pacing the Royals in kills.

North Tama senior Shayla Kopriva was a first-team all-conference selection as well after leading the Redhawks in digs. Kopriva gained honorable mention as a sophomore.

Don Bosco’s Abby Schaefer and Lexy Hogan and Waterloo Christian’s Anna Doering rounded out the first team.

Colo-NESCO seniors and twin sisters Madison and McKenna Farren both gained second-team selection for the second year in a row, while North Tama’s Molly Dvorak and Anna Kvidera were second-team picks for the first time. Same goes for GMG senior Caitlin Appelgate, who led the Wolverines in service aces and serving percentage, shared the team lead in blocks and was second in kills.

Area players receiving honorable mention were Kylie Sarver of Colo-NESCO, Mikaella Koster of GMG, Kadyn Clark from Meskwaki Settlement and Sara Howard of North Tama.

Janesville junior Kendyl Sorge was one of three Janesville players picked to the elite team. This was the third such honor for Sorge.
