SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat JV boys defeated in opener
GRINNELL – The Marshalltown junior varsity boys’ basketball team suffered defeat in Monday’s season-opener, falling 68-41 at Grinnell.
Hunter Chamberlin led the Bobcats with 10 points, while Hunter Eygabroad chipped in six points and Brandin Chaloupek had five. Three players – Grant Thimesch, Michael Schrempf and Hunter Riedl – pitched in with three points apiece.
Christian Guido had a team-high five rebounds and Thimesch led with three steals.
The MHS junior varsity boys’ squad has a week off before traveling to face Indianola next Monday night.
Marshalltown man scores hole-in-one
Scott Kilstrom of Marshalltown scored a hole-in-one on Oct. 17 at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course, acing the 142-yard seventh hole with his 7-iron.
Kilstrom’s shot was witnessed by Steve Simons, Marty Sharer, Ted Williams and Dan Reutzel.
ISU netters into NCAA tourney again
AMES – The Iowa State volleyball team will play in the NCAA tournament for the eighth year in a row after the Cyclones were selected as an at-large participant on Sunday.
Iowa State (18-9) will travel to Minneapolis for regional play and will meet Colorado (17-13) at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Sports Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus. Colorado leads the all-time series 39-17.
The winner will face either Big Ten at-large qualifier Minnesota (27-6) or Big South Conference champ Radford (25-9) in Saturday’s 7 p.m. contest.
