Man forges check, steals money
A local man who stole a blank check, forged a signature and made a purchase with it has been arrested.
A warrant was issued for Van A. Gentry, 48, after he made a $90 purchase with the check at a local business.
According to police, the investigation began Nov. 1 after the victim came to officers reporting acts of forgery.
Gentry turned himself in on those warrants Wednesday and he was taken to jail and charged with forgery, a Class D felony and fifth-degree theft, a simple misdemeanor.

On Nov. 22, Mary Lou Schmidt, of State Center, reported the theft of three overhead garage door openers and a box of quick grip screws from a shed located at her residence. Estimated value of loss was $500.
On Sunday, Troy Michael Hess, of Newton, was arrested for possession of a Schedule I controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Sunday, Amy Jo Jones, of Newton, was arrested for operating while intoxicated-first offense.
On Nov. 30, Michelle Lynn Foote, of Montour, was arrested for interference with official acts, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, contraband in jail and on a Polk County warrant for failure to appear.
On Nov. 30, Daniela Castellanos, 533 N. Third St. Apt. D, was arrested for driving while barred, driving under suspension, no driver’s license and no insurance.
On Nov. 29, Celso Lopez Alcaraz, 603 E. Main St., was arrested for operating while intoxicated-first offense, driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway, no driver’s license, no insurance and leaving the scene of an accident.
On Monday, a vehicle driven by Wade Scott Shriver, of Iowa City, was westbound on Highway 30 when it struck a deer and came to rest on the south shoulder of the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Shriver vehicle was estimated at $5,000.
On Saturday, a vehicle driven by Robert Dale Rogers, of Eldora, was southbound on Marsh Avenue attempting to negotiate a curve when it hit some loose gravel and entered the south ditch where it rolled onto the passenger side and came to rest. Rogers was possibly injured, but not transported. Damage to the Rogers vehicle was estimated at $2,500.
On Nov. 27, a pickup driven by John Burton Anderson, of Grinnell, was southbound on Wallace Avenue at the intersection with the Garwin Road when it pulled away from the stop sign into the path of a minivan driven by John Ira Whitehead, 307 S. Sixth St., which was traveling east on the Garwin Road and a collision occurred. No injuries were reported. Anderson was cited for driving while revoked and failure to have a valid driver’s license. Damage to the Anderson pickup was estimated at $500 while the Whitehead minivan received an estimated $8,000 in damage.

On Dec. 3, Brett Buffington, 305 S. Sixth St., reported someone prying open the lock on a shed at his residence and the theft of a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle, a tool bag with miscellaneous Snap-On tools inside and a damaged gas tank. Estimated value of loss was $1,100.
On Dec. 2, Melisa Kay Hayward, 412 N. Eighth Ave., reported the theft of a 2001 Volkswagen Golf from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $5,500.
On Dec. 2, an employee with Dewey Ford Marshall County Auto, 2001 S. Center St., reported damage to a panel on a overhead door and a metal safe door and the theft of a DeWalt drill, a Black & Decker drill, cash, down-payment checks from customers, a rechargeable flash light, a Mac rechargeable flash light and a five gallon bucket. Estimated value of loss was $10,094.
On Dec. 2, an employee with Schwann’s Ice Cream, 917 N. Fourth Ave., reported the theft of nine 20 foot 220 power cords from the business. Estimated value of loss was $1,000.
On Dec. 2, Mario Hernan Melendez, 710 E. Boone St., reported the theft of a Suzuki ATV and a boys bicycle. Estimated value of loss was $2,650.
On Thursday, a citizen reported for the City of Marshalltown hit and run damage to an alternate side parking sign on North Sixth Street. Estimated value of damage was $100.
On Monday, Gordon Michael Riendeau, 502 E. Main St., was cited for theft-third degree.
On Monday, Suleepon Danner, 620 Woodbury St., was cited for dog at large.
On Monday, Jimmy Allen Austgen, 609 E. Main St., was arrested for possession of a Schedule II controlled substance with the intent to deliver.
On Monday, Ashley Marie Campbell, 3108 S. Center St. Room #125, was arrested for theft-fifth degree.
On Monday, Nicole Lynn Roberts, 105 S. Fifth St., was arrested for simple assault.
On Monday, Brandon Lee Schmidt, 1306 W. Linn St., was arrested for domestic assault-strangulation-causing bodily injury and obstruction of emergency communications.
On Monday, Jason Allan Darter, 3202 S. 12th St. Lot #125, was arrested for interference with official acts and serious domestic assault.
On Monday, Larry Edwin Gwinn, of Le Grand, was arrested for possession of a Schedule I controlled substance-marijuana-enhanced.
On Sunday, Joshua James Lyster, of Ames, was arrested for carrying weapons.
