Wendell continues hot streak in Drake win
DES MOINES – The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week stayed red-hot Thursday.
Freshman Lizzy Wendell scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to help the Drake women’s basketball team to a 78-59 triumph over Idaho State at the Knapp Center.
Four other Bulldogs scored in double figures as Drake hit 11 3-pointers and got 20 points from its bench in the win.
Wendell was 3-of-4 from long range in the victory, while Carly Grenfell connected on four of her seven 3-point attempts.
Grenfell scored 14 points off the bench, while Kyndal Clark chipped in 11 with three more triples.
Alyssa Marschner also had 10 points and nine rebounds and Ashley Bartow finished with 12 points and six rebounds as the Bulldogs are now 4-4 on the season.
“We had great energy at the beginning of the game,” Drake coach Jennie Baranczyk said. “It was such a great team effort tonight. Idaho State is a tough, scrappy team.”
Drake jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never trailed in the contest, leading 43-28 at halftime. The Bulldogs led by as many as 22 in the second half.
Wendell’s double-double was the first of her young career. Drake’s 18 assists came on its 26 made field goals and the Bulldogs also were 15-of-21 from the line and out-rebounded Idaho State 45-39.
“There were some things that we didn’t do well that Idaho State exposed us on,” Baranczyk said. “But there were some really great things we did. That’s how the game went.
“I’m proud of our effort because even though we didn’t play great, we found a way to win.”
Drake will take a week off for finals before returning to action at the Knapp Center on Dec. 17 against SIU-Edwardsville. Tip-off is slated for 12:05 p.m.
