Ferch’s buzzer-beater sends Trojans to victory

WATERLOO – Duncan Ferch’s 3-pointer at the buzzer sent the West Marshall boy’s basketball team to a 63-62 win over Waterloo Columbus on Tuesday.

Ferch finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in the win and six of his points came in the final 14 seconds to help the Trojans seal up the victory. He also connected on four 3-pointers.

Matt Van Metre also finished with 12 points for West Marshall, while Trenton Keislar chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Trojans (1-1) trailed by one after one but a 20-13 advantage in the second quarter pushed West Marshall in front at halftime. Waterloo Columbus (0-1) outscored the Trojans by five in the second half but Ferch was too tough down the stretch.

Nick Eighne had 16 points to lead Waterloo Columbus, while Beau McMahon added 15.

The Trojans will next play at South Tama at 7:45 p.m. before playing at North Polk at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
