BOYS HOOPS: GMG takes down Braves for season’s first triumph
GARWIN – Senior guard Chad Plaehn matched his career-high with 22 points and the GMG boys’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season, outscoring Montezuma 77-62 on Saturday night.
Luke Petty poured in 17 points, Bryce Newcomb added 13 and Brock Fisher 10 as the Wolverines got out to an early lead and kept the Braves (2-1) at bay.
GMG shot 73 percent (24-for-33) from the free-throw line and outscored Montezuma 29-25 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Fisher had a team-leading eight rebounds, Newcomb added seven boards, while Petty and Bridger Claassen had five apiece.
Siraj Thomason led Montezuma with 15 points and Logan Price added 11 more.
GMG had its Iowa Star Conference game with the Meskwaki Warriors from Friday night postponed because of a fatal car accident involving family members of the Meskwaki basketball squads. The make-up date has not yet been determined.
West Marshall 64, North Polk 49
ALLEMAN – Elijah Streeter shot 4-for-7 from 3-point range on his way to a career-high 17 points, leading the West Marshall boys to a 64-49 non-conference win over North Polk.
Duncan Ferch added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Trenton Keislar had 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Nick Juel contributed 10 points, while Reggie Gradwell and Matt Van Metre both had five points in the win.
Russell Greene led North Polk with 17 points and Brett Haun had 16 more.
Colo-NESCO 38, Waterloo Christian 24
WATERLOO – Tanner Clatt poured in a game-high 15 points in leading the Colo-NESCO boys to a 38-24 win over host Waterloo Christian in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.
Cole Osbun added nine points and Christian Reischauer had eight more for the Royals (2-0, 2-0). Grant Tiarks had a team-leading 10 rebounds for C-N, which outscored the Regents 20-7 after halftime.
Timothy Doering led Waterloo Christian (0-2, 0-2) with six points.
