SPORTS SHORTS: EM/GMG takes second in Montezuma

MONTEZUMA – East Marshall/GMG crowned three champions en route to a runner-up team finish at the 23rd annual Monte Invite on Saturday.

Nick Meling, Zach Underhill and Devin Yilek won their respective weight brackets to lead the Mustangs to 180 points. Iowa Valley won the 10-team tournament with 212.5 points. Lynnville-Sully (139.5), Pleasantville (131), Pella (125), Lone Tree (100), Grinnell JV (89), Tri-County/Montezuma (88), GRNT-GC (80) and North Mahaska (10) rounded out the field.

Meling, ranked eighth in Class 2A, scored a technical fall over Pella’s Ethan Speltz in his only match to capture the 106-pound title. There were just three wrestlers in his bracket.

Underhill, rated 10th, won three times – twice by fall – and defeated Pella’s Chase Petty 10-7 in the title bout.

Yilek pinned both of his opponents for the 152 crown.

Three other Mustangs reached the finals of their brackets: Seth Webb (113), Nick Long (160) and Jarod Young (195). Webb was decisioned 14-9 by Cole Nickell of Lynnville-Sully; 1A No. 4 Caden Doll of L-S scored a technical fall of Long; and Young was pinned by Lone Tree’s Ty Robertson.

Steve Proffitt (120) and Max Upah (138) took third for EM/GMG, while Drew Schossow (145) and Jarred Bowman (220) placed fourth.

East Marshall/GMG is back in action Thursday with a trip to Traer scheduled. The Mustangs meet host GRNT-GC and Hudson in North Iowa Cedar League action.

MHS tabs three champs in Ames

AMES – The Marshalltown wrestling team crowned three champions at the Ames Freshman/Sophomore Tournament on Saturday.

Tyler Baccam went 4-0 on his way to a title at 152 pounds, while Tristen Traylor was 3-0 at 126 and Luis Chavez went 2-1 at 113.

Runner-up finishes went to Carlos Gomez at 132 and Dakota Weishaubt at 145, and picking up third-place finishes were Devon Mann (170) and John Remster (220).

Bobcat JV girls dispatch Boone

BOONE – Ellyn Boland scored 16 points to lead the Marshalltown junior varsity girls’ basketball team to a 46-38 victory over Boone on Saturday.

Kyra Hungerford added eight points while Karli McClure and Carrie Schmidt both chipped in seven points in the win.
