Five arrested for fraud, forgery

Five people have been charged with theft and forgery for using fraudulent checks at local businesses.

The Marshalltown Police Department received a call Sept. 12 about two people that had passed two fraudulent payroll checks at a local business. In the following days, several other local businesses reported similar fraudulent payroll checks, said Capt. Chris Jones, of the MPD.

Matthew Hazelwood, 29 of Marshalltown, is charged with ongoing criminal conduct, a Class B felony, 18 counts of ongoing forgery, a Class D felony, three counts of second-degree theft, a Class D felony and two counts of third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Christopher Varnum, 35, of Rhodes, is charged with five counts of forgery, a Class D felony and third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Maize Yantis, 21, of Conrad, Vinton Carmer II, 32, and Jimmy Austgen, 45, both of Marshalltown, are all charged with two counts of forgery, a Class D felony and third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Jones said additional arrests may be pending and anyone that has information regarding this incident should contact the MPD at 641-754-5725.
