Maroons march through Bobcat matmen, 59-15
WEST DES MOINES – Seven of Dowling Catholic’s 11 match victories came by fall as the Maroons marched past Marshalltown, 59-15, in Tuesday’s Central Iowa Conference dual meet.
Marshalltown (0-4) got a pair of pins early in the match from ranked 182-pounder Derek Mann and then Justus Bjelland at 195 to lead 12-6, but Dowling (8-2) won the next five bouts – four by fall and another by forfeit – to take a commanding lead it would not relinquish.
The Bobcats broke up Dowling’s run with Reese Hageman’s 10-8 decision over Soren Khyl at 126, but the Maroons closed out the victory with five more wins.
Mann, ranked eighth in Class 3A, pinned Dowling’s Jared Jaeger in 2 minutes, 35 seconds to help the Bobcats break even after the 170-pound match went the Maroons’ way with a first-period pin. Bjelland added a second-period pin, but the Bobcats were open at heavyweight to create a 12-all tie that Dowling broke with four straight pins.
The last two matches were won by the Maroons as well, as Alex Svec edged Peyton Williams 4-2 at 152, and third-rated Isaiah Patton tallied an 11-5 triumph over Josh Edel at 160.
Marshalltown heads to the Battle of Waterloo tournament on Friday and Saturday at Young Arena in Waterloo. The Bobcats start the invite against eighth-ranked Iowa City West in Friday’s 9 a.m. opening round.
Win or lose, MHS will wrestle three duals on Friday and three more Saturday to determine its place in the 32-team field. The Bobcats have never finished higher than 25th in three previous trips to the prep wrestling extravaganza.
