SPORTS SHORTS: MHS JV girls score win over Newton

Kyra Hungerford scored 13 points and Tabby Steffensen added nine before leaving the game with an injury as the Marshalltown junior varsity basketball team beat Newton, 46-44, on Saturday afternoon.

Ellyn Boland scored eight in the win, while Molly Major chipped in six. Rachel Whaley also cracked the scoreboard with five points.

Steffensen left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. She did not play in the varsity game later in the day and will be further evaluated to find out the severity of the injury, according to MHS varsity coach Stacy O’Hare.

Bobcat sophs take down Cardinals

Tony Smith scored 18 points and Sam Rogers added 15 more as the Marshalltown sophomore boys’ basketball team beat Newton 51-44 on Saturday at the Roundhouse.

Drake Slifer pitched in with nine points and Trevor Dolezal pulled down a team-leading 11 rebounds in the win.

The Bobcats get back in klaction on Jan. 3, 2014, with a road game at Southeast Polk.
