Thousands without power in Marshall, Tama counties
According to Alliant Energy spokesman Justin Foss approximately 9100 customers in Marshall county and 200 customers in Tama county are without power following an incident at the main substation near the Sutherland Generating Station on Thursday night.
At approximately 10 pm Thursday night an unknown failure occured in the current transformer of the main substation, resulting in widespread power outages throughout Marshall and Tama counties.
No injuries were reported following the equipment failure.
Initial reports of an explosion at the Sutherland Generating Station were unfounded, according to Foss.
“There was no explosion,” said Foss. He explained that when there is an equipment problem on a substation there can be a popping sound, and it can be quite loud.
Foss said that Alliant crews were still looking for an exact cause of the outage and could not offer an estimate for when power would be restored to the affected customers.
Power was being restored to some Marshall county customers as of press time.
