SPORTS SHORTS: MHS Quarterback Club resumes Friday
The Marshalltown High School Quarterback Club will be back up and running this Friday at noon at the Junction Lounge at the Best Western Plus Regency Inn.
Varsity coaches Scott Smith (boys basketball), Stacy O’Hare (girls basketball) and Mike Loupee (boys swimming) will be on hand to speak during the luncheon.
Spots remain for girls’ MOBI tourney
A limited number of spots remain open in the girls’ portion of the Marshalltown Optimist Basketball Invitational (MOBI), which will be held Jan. 18.
Deadline for entries is Monday.
The Marshalltown Noon Optimist Club is sponsoring two youth basketball tournaments for students in grades 5-8. The boys’ tournament will be held Feb. 8, with a Jan. 27 deadline.
Each team to enter is guaranteed three games in pool play, and four teams from each grade division qualify for the ensuing championship round. Cost per team is $150.

Drake’s Wendell honored by MVC again
ST. LOUIS – Drake freshman forward Lizzy Wendell has been selected as the Missouri Valley Conference’s women’s basketball Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced Tuesday.
Wendell scored 13 points in Drake’s 79-57 win over Milwaukee last week. The Blue Springs, Mo., native is averaging 12.5 points per game, which is second on the squad and is second among freshmen in the MVC.
The Bulldogs are back in action Friday with their MVC opener at Illinois State.
Iowa wrestler wins weekly honor
IOWA CITY – University of Iowa freshman Thomas Gilman has been named the Big Ten Conference’s Wrestler of the Week for the first time in his career.
Gilman ousted defending 125-pound national champion Jesse Delgado of Illinois in the semifinal match at the 2013 Midlands Championship on Monday, winning 3-1. Gilman went on to defeat defending Midlands champion Jarrod Garnett of Virginia Tech, 6-1, in the title bout.
Gilman is 9-2 with three wins over ranked opponents. The Hawkeyes, who won the Midlands team title, return to the mat on Friday at Purdue.
