Cougar hoops swept by A-P in cross-NICL twinbill

PARKERSBURG – Freshman Maddie Brandt scored a career-high 10 points off the bench but AGWSR’s second-half rally came up short in a 38-33 loss to Aplington-Parkersburg Thursday.

The Cougars trailed 13-5 after the first quarter but closed the deficit to 19-14 at the half and 27-25 entering the fourth. Abbie Young and Megan Marlette each scored four from the bench as the Cougars (3-5) got 24 points from their subs.

Morgan Kappel, Madi Fryslie and Alana Groninga scored three points apiece, while Kim Ellingson had four rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks. AGWSR finished 7-of-19 from the free throw line.

The host Falcons (2-6) ended a four-game skid.

AGWSR returns to NICL West Division play Tuesday when they host BCLUW.

Nick Waller and Ross Cooper scored 16 points apiece as the Aplington-Parkersburg boys outscored AGWSR 18-9 in the fourth quarter for a 65-56 win.

The game was tied at 47 heading into the final frame before the Falcons (3-4) broke away.

No stats were available for the Cougars (4-3), who lost their second straight.
