PREP WRESTLING: Bobcat grapplers record three pins, edge Roosevelt

DES MOINES – The Marshalltown wrestling team did not have the services of Class 3A No. 2 ranked Derek Mann on Thursday night, but the Bobcats still found a way to knock off Des Moines Roosevelt.

MHS scored three pins and took the lead for good when Reese Hageman, Mitch O’Hare and Jordan Paone won consecutive matches at 126, 132 and 138 during a 37-33 victory over the Roughriders.

The Bobcats surrendered a forfeit at 120 to give Roosevelt a brief lead, but then pins from Hageman and Paone sandwiched between a 5-2 decision from O’Hare put the Bobcats in front 18-9 and MHS never trailed again.

Peyton Williams (152), Josh Edel (160), Ben Rebik (182) and Justus Bjelland (195) also won to help Marshalltown claim its second dual win of the season. Bjelland’s pin at 195 secured the victory for the Bobcats, who also gave up a forfeit at 220.

Marshalltown next wrestles Saturday at the Allie Morrison Duals inside the Roundhouse. The Bobcats will begin the day against North Polk at 9 a.m. They also will take on East Marshall/GMG, Albia, Norwalk and Grinnell.

East Marshall/GMG sweeps a pair on the road

WATERLOO – The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team traveled to Waterloo on Thursday and returned home with two more dual wins.

The Mustangs recorded three pins and two major decisions during a 44-24 win over Waterloo Columbus and then edged NICL West rival South Tama County in the nightcap, 36-33.

The wins improve to East Marshall to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in NICL West Division action.

Class 2A No. 8 Nick Meling won both of his matches at 106 by forfeit, and No. 10 Zach Underhill also went 2-0 with two pins at 132. Also finishing 2-0 on the night were Nick Long, Lane Walton and Devin Yilek. Long recorded two pins and Yilek had two wins by major decision.

The Trojans took the first two matches of East Marshall-South Tama County dual, but the Mustangs rallied behind pins from Underhill and Long as well as major decisions from Yilek and Jarod Young. Max Upah also won his match at 138 by technical fall.

South Tama County got wins from Kyle Llewellyn, Kolton Smith, Angel Escarzaga, Dalton Vest, Lansin Lacina, Jake Thiessen and Brandyn Jensen. Vest is ranked No. 5 at 285.

Don Bosco gets redemption against Trojans

LA PORTE CITY – It was a rough night on the mats for the West Marshall wrestling team Thursday as the Trojans returned home with losses to Union Community and Don Bosco.

West Marshall recorded just three wins over Union in the 48-15 loss and also fell to the Dons, 48-24.

Cooper White and Chad Berrey both earned pins against Union and the other win came from Class 1A No. 6 Cole Needham at 113.

Class 1A No. 3 Dale Hilleman bounced back from a loss to Class 2A No. 4 Jacob Holschlag in the Union dual to beat Don Bosco’s T.J. Evans by fall in the nightcap.

Other wins for West Marshall against Don Bosco came from Christopher Sjoblom at 182, Alex Schaper at 285, Needham at 113 and Jared Johnson at 152. Johnson’s win came against the ninth ranked wrestler at 138 pounds, Chris Paulsen.

The Trojans return to action Saturday when they travel to the SH-BCLUW Storm Duals in Conrad. Action begins at 9:30 a.m.
