BOYS HOOPS: Rebels break free of East Marshall in second half

REINBECK – Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s penchant for second-half defense continued on Thursday night as the Rebels limited East Marshall en route to a 74-44 victory in NICL West Division action.

The game was moved up in anticipation of winter weather expected today, and the Rebels (8-1, 6-1) came around in the second half yet again. Winning their fourth straight, G-R outscored the visiting Mustangs 30-10 in the second half to put the game away.

Zach Pierce led the Rebels with 17 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Camden Kickbush knocked down three 3-pointers on his way to 13 points, while Joe Smoldt contributed 10 points and seven assists.

Chase Clark and Luke Holman both netted eight points for the Rebels.

East Marshall got 16 points and five rebounds from Nate DeBondt. Ryan Puumala added eight points, Ben Terrones had seven points and five boards, and Zack Johnson chipped in six points as the Mustangs (0-9, 0-6) remained winless.

Both teams are scheduled to play in the NICL Winter Classic on Saturday at Wartburg College in Waverly. East Marshall meets Wapsie Valley at 5:30 p.m., while the Rebels face Dike-New Hartford at 8:30 p.m.

Tripoli 68, North Tama 60

TRAER – Austin Newbrough scored a season-high 31 points, going 12-for-16 at the free-throw line, in leading the Panthers past North Tama in Iowa Star Conference play.

Patric Benson contributed 17 points, Carew Vogt had 10 and Nick Shinstine had nine for Tripoli (4-3, 4-2), which trailed after the first period but outscored North Tama 28-13 in the second to go into the half ahead by 12.

Logan Zobel and Ben Panfil both had career-high scoring nights for the Redhawks, netting 19 and 17 points, respectively. Paul Kaufmann tallied 14 points and eight rebounds.

Taylor Dinsdale notched seven points and 12 assists, while Dylan Clausen had three points and eight boards for North Tama (2-6, 1-6). The Redhawks are slated to visit Dunkerton tonight.
