GIRLS HOOPS: Mustang girls get past G-R for second straight
REINBECK – A big second quarter helped the East Marshall girls’ basketball team claim its second straight North Iowa Cedar League win on Thursday night.
The Mustangs got 15 points and eight rebounds from Ashley Allen and 12 points and six boards from Taylor Fricke and an 18-7 advantage in the second quarter pushed the Mustangs to a 49-48 road win over Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
The game was moved up from Friday in an attempt to beat the forecasted freezing rain for today.
The win by the Mustangs (3-8, 3-3) was their second straight. East Marshall also handed West Marshall a double-digit defeat on Tuesday.
Mariah Fritz also scored 10 points and dished out seven assists for the Mustangs, while Meriel Leavy added eight points and six boards off the bench. East Marshall did not hit a 3 but was 20-of-39 from the floor in the game.
Hanna Christopher led the way for G-R with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Amber Berendes added 14 points off the bench. Britney Keller chipped in seven points, four rebounds and four steals, while Nicole Adair had five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Hayley Weber had three rebounds and four steals as well. The Rebels (4-6, 2-5) had 18 steals in the game.
The most recent losses to Grundy Center and East Marshall have been by a total of five points.
The Mustangs will next play at BCLUW on Tuesday, while the Rebels are at conference-leading and unbeaten South Hardin. Both games tip off at 6:15 p.m.
