GIRLS HOOPS: Wolverines net first win behind Appelgate’s 23
GARWIN – The GMG girls’ basketball team notched its first win of the season in convincing fashion, routing Valley Lutheran 71-4 in Saturday’s non-conference contest.
Caitlin Appelgate scored a career-high 23 points for the Wolverines (1-9), who eclipsed 70 points for the first time since Feb. 15, 2008. Olivia Barritt added 17 points and Katie Airey had 10 more for GMG, which won one game last season. Josie Claassen contributed eight points and Mikaella Koster chipped in six more.
Valley Lutheran, in its first year of competition, fell to 0-9. The Crusaders have scored no more than 10 points in a game this season.
GMG returns to Iowa Star Conference play on Tuesday night, hosting Tripoli.
AGWSR 62, South Hardin 49
ELDORA – Maddie Brandt scored a career-high 21 points and Madi Fryslie added a season-best 20 as the AGWSR girls gave South Hardin its first loss, 62-49, in Friday’s NICL West Division clash.
Brandt shot 7-for-11 from the field and 7-of-8 at the free-throw line to lead the Cougars (5-5, 4-2). Fryslie was 7-of-9 from the floor and also paced AGWSR with eight rebounds and four assists. Abbie Young chipped in seven points as the Cougars led from the outset.
Kayla Prosser poured in 18 points to go with eight rebounds for South Hardin (8-1, 4-1). Kassidy Bunger added 11 points, Sarah Boomgarden had seven and Haley Lawrence six. Lawrence led the previously unbeaten Tigers with nine rebounds.
Colo-NESCO 56, Northeast Hamilton 18
BLAIRSBURG – Shayla Dean finished in close proximity to a triple-double and the Class 1A No. 3-ranked Colo-NESCO Royals rocked Northeast Hamilton (0-7, 0-6) in Iowa Star Conference action.
Dean tallied 17 points, 10 steals and seven assists as the Royals improved to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in league play.
Caitlyn Riese added 11 points, Madison Farren had eight and Leah Vincent six for Colo-NESCO, which led 22-4 after the first quarter and 40-12 at the half.
