SPORTS SHORTS: Smith’s 18 propels Bobcat sophomores

DES MOINES – Tony Smith scored 18 points and Trevor Dolezal added nine points and 10 rebounds in the Marshalltown sophomore boys’ basketball team’s 49-36 win over Des Moines East on Friday night.

The Bobcats also got eight points from Kyler Ladehoff and seven more from Sam Weatherman.

MHS (3-6) will play at Waukee at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

East JV pulls away from Bobcats late

DES MOINES – The Des Moines East girls’ junior varsity basketball team took advantage when Kyra Hungerford and Karli McClure left the contest Friday and pulled away from the Bobcats in the second half of a 31-22 victory.

Hungerford and McClure both play significant minutes at the varsity level and were limited in the JV game. The Bobcats hung around but couldn’t come up with the win.

Hungerford finished with five points, while Rachel Whaley had five points, five rebounds and two steals. Jasmine Scott added four points and McClure had eight steals for MHS.
