Phillip Terrell Davis, 207 W. Linn St., made an initial appearance on a criminal mischief-fourth degree charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 11. Conditions of Davis’ release included being released with supervision through the Department of Correctional Services and reporting to their offices within 48 hours; and continuing his employment.
Nathan Wayne Cuellar, address unknown, made an initial appearance on two counts of a theft-fifth degree charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $100 for each count with a $35 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $320 on each count, due within 30 days of today’s date. Restitution may be required if applicable.
Michael Andrade, 1006 S. Seventh Ave., made an initial appearance on a possession of a Schedule II controlled substance-enhanced charge, a possession of contraband charge, a trespass charge, a criminal mischief-fifth degree charge and a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Jan. 30. Bond is set at $5,000 cash only. There is an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold on Andrade.
Marshalltown Police Department
On Tuesday a car driven by Marcelino Andrade, 911 May St., was eastbound on Highway 14 in the inside lane when a school bus in front applied its brakes causing the Andrade car to apply its brakes resulting in it swerving and colliding with the driver’s side of vehicle driven by Sage Christine Ballalatak, 502 N. 16th St., which was traveling east in the outside lane. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Andrade car was estimated at $800 while the Ballalatak vehicle received an estimated $1,500 in damage.
On Tuesday, a minivan driven by Betty Lou Ruse, 3202 S. 12th St. Lot #83, was southbound on South Center Street when it went out of control on the icy roadway and began a sideways slide while a car driven by Gary Lee Gulbranson, 202 N. Second Ave. Apt. #7, attempted to avoid contact by changing lanes and started sliding sideways until the two vehicles collided. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Ruse minivan was estimated at $1,000 while the Gulbranson car received an estimated $3,000 in damage.
On Tuesday, a pickup driven by Marco Antonio Meza Medina, 404 N. 13th Ave., was southbound on South Third Avenue in the left lane attempting to merge into the right lane when it went out of control on the icy, downhill roadway while a pickup driven by Steven R. Springer, of Plano, Ill., which was in front of the Meza Medina pickup, shifted lanes to avoid contact and lost control resulting in the collision of the two pickups. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Meza Medina pickup was estimated at $500 while the Springer pickup received an estimated $1,500 in damage.
On Tuesday, a car driven by Vicky Ann Wall, 1842 Reed Ave., was westbound on State Street approaching the intersection with Center Street when it collided with rear of a pickup driven by Jorge Calderon, 506 N. Third St., which had stopped abruptly. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Wall car was estimated at $3,000.
On Tuesday, a car driven by Hilda Alvarez, 501 Thomas Drive Apt. East, was traveling on South Center Street when it went out of control in the slippery roadway exiting the road to the right onto a terrace stopping caught by a gutter while a minivan driven by Micheal Steven Fisher, 501 May St., came over a hill and applied its brakes to avoid the Alvarez car causing his minivan to enter a slide followed by a vehicle driven by Brittany Lynn Gould, 2708 Garwin Road, which crested the hill and applied its brakes to avoid contact with Fisher minivan sending it into a slide resulting in the minivan and Gould vehicle to collide. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Alvarez car was estimated at $500 while the Fisher minivan received an estimated $400 in damage and the Gould vehicle an estimated $1,000 in damage.
On Monday, a vehicle driven by Sandra Nohemi George Deniz, 710 E. State St., was northbound on South Sixth Street approaching Roberts Terrace when it collided with the left rear quarter panel and light panel on a pickup driven by Scott Daniel DeSotel, 2381 Luray Road, which was also traveling north on South Sixth Street continuing its slide into the front of a vehicle driven by Michael Dale Holubar, 2405 Eagle Ridge Drive, which was traveling south on Sixth Street. Holubar and passenger Sandra Holubar, 2405 Eagle Ridge Drive, were transported to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center with injuries. George Deniz was cited for driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended and failure to maintain control. Damage to the George Deniz vehicle was estimated at $10,000 while the DeSotel pickup received an estimated $800 in damage and the Holubar vehicle an estimated $15,000 in damage.
On Monday, a car driven by Kevin Joe Switzer, of Liscomb, was northbound on Edgebrook Drive when it went out of control on a curve, exited the right side of the roadway and struck a fire hydrant owned by the City of Marshalltown, an electrical box belonging to Alliant Energy and a phone box. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Switzer car was estimated at $3,000 while the fire hydrant received an estimated $500 in damage and the electrical box an estimated $2,000 in damage.

On Tuesday, a car driven by Jenna Rose Garrels, of Le Grand, was southbound on Zeller Avenue when it went out of control on the icy roadway, crossed the center line, began to spin, entered the east ditch and struck a sign pole belonging to the Iowa Department of Transportation causing damage to the passenger rear quarter panel and shattering the rear window. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Garrels car was estimated at $1,500 while the IDOT sign post received an estimated $200 in damage.
On Tuesday, a car driven by Tluang Kio, 11 W. Grant St. Apt. #7, was westbound on Highway 30 when it went out of control and entered a spin through a ditch into eastbound lanes of traffic, crossing the roadway and entering the south ditch where it came to rest. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Kio car was estimated at $1,500.
On Saturday, a car driven by Joseph Thomas Duran, of Colo, was exiting Highway 30 eastbound to the Iowa Avenue off ramp when it went out of control, entered the east ditch sideways and rolled once coming to rest on its wheels. Duran was transported to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center with possible injuries. Damage to the Duran car was estimated at $5,000.
On Saturday, a car driven by Richard Scott Welch, of Conrad, was northbound on Highway 330 when it went out of control on the ice, struck the left side of the bridge with the driver’s side of the car and then the passenger side on the right side of the bridge and then went into a spin before coming to a stop. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Welch car was estimated at $4,500.
On Saturday, a vehicle driven by Annette Marie Mayfield, 605 N. Second Ave., was northbound on Reed Avenue when it struck a deer that entered the traveled portion of the roadway from the east ditch causing damage to the front end and passenger side. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Mayfield vehicle was estimated at $1,500.
