PREP BASKETBALL: Royals get back on track against Ankeny Christian

ANKENY – The Colo-NESCO boys’ basketball team got back to its winning ways, rebounding from Tuesday’s decisive loss at Dunkerton by defeating Ankeny Christian Academy in Thursday’s non-conference contest, 59-47.

The Royals (10-4) doubled up the host Eagles 26-13 in the fourth quarter to overcome a one-point deficit heading into the final frame.

Christian Reischauer led Colo-NESCO with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Tanner Clatt contributed 13 points, five boards and four assists. Brady Stoeffler (8 points), Grant Tiarks (7), Cole Ozbun (6) and Casy Angell (6) rounded out the Royals’ scoring.

The win came two days after Colo-NESCO had its six-game winning streak halted by Class 1A No. 8 Dunkerton, 60-38.

Ankeny Christian (10-4) saw a five-game win streak snapped despite three double-digit scorers. Bradley Fisher led the Hawks with 15 points, JJ Waddle added 14, and Daniel Strong finished with 10.

Colo-NESCO rounds out a four-game road swing with tonight’s Iowa Star Conference contest at North Tama.


South Tama 53, Vinton-Shellsburg 43

VINTON – Three Trojans scored in double figures as the South Tama County girls’ basketball team claimed its ninth straight victory Thursday with a 53-43 decision over Vinton-Shellsburg.

Regina Balderas paced the Trojans (10-2) with 14 points, Tieranny Keahna scored 12 and Madie Bacon had 11 as STC stretched a 14-9 first quarter lead to 30-23 at the break. Trisha Walz hauled in a team-best 14 rebounds to go with three steals and three blocks. Bacon recorded nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Keahna claimed eight boards and Paige Van Dyk chipped in eight points and four assists.
