BOYS HOOPS: Trojans need fourth-quarter surge to stop BCLUW
CONRAD – West Marshall overcame BCLUW’s blazing-fast start, but not until the fourth quarter of the Trojans’ 58-49 come-from-behind win over the Comets in NICL West Division boys’ basketball action Friday.
The Comets (4-9, 2-8) led 12-2 after the first quarter, 26-22 at the half and 36-35 entering the final frame. But reigning conference co-champion West Marshall outscored BCLUW 23-13 in the fourth to prolong the team’s win streak to 11 games.
Duncan Ferch scored a season-high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds and five assists for West Marshall (15-2, 10-1). Matt Van Metre added 17 points and five boards as the duo combined to score 43 of the team’s 58 points.
Conner Ubben scored 16 points to lead BCLUW, which suffered its fourth straight loss. Ty Runge contributed 10 points and Cole Silver had eight more.
South Tama 73, East Marshall 61
TAMA – The South Tama boys scored their season-high for the second game in a row, avenging an earlier five-point loss to East Marshall with a 12-point defeat of the Mustangs in Friday’s NICL West pairing.
Darius Lasley shot 7-of-10 from the field and at the free-throw line on his way to a team-leading 24 points for South Tama (3-10, 3-6). Grant Koch was 9-of-13 from the floor en route to 20 points, and freshman Clayton Rosenberger contributed a season-high 10 points off the bench for the Trojans.
Nate DeBondt scored a season-high 23 points to go with 10 rebounds to lead East Marshall (1-14, 1-10) in the loss. Ben Terrones tallied 19 points, while Zack Johnson had a team-high nine rebounds for the Mustangs.
Colo-NESCO 69, North Tama 52
TRAER – A balanced scoring effort led Colo-NESCO past North Tama in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference showdown, with the Royals prevailing 69-52.
Tanner Clatt led Colo-NESCO with 19 points, Cole Ozbun scored 15, Brady Stoeffler finished with 13 and Christian Reischauer had 12 more. Reischauer led with nine rebounds, six assists and three steals as the Royals (11-4, 9-2) trailed 17-13 after the first quarter before overtaking North Tama for good in the second period.
Taylor Dinsdale scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Redhawks (6-8, 4-8), while Paul Kaufmann finished with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.
GMG 52, Don Bosco 42
GILBERTVILLE – Luke Petty shared game-high honors with 19 points, going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in helping GMG hold off Don Bosco 52-42 in Iowa Star Conference play.
Chad Plaehn contributed 11 points, while Bryce Newcomb and Bridger Claassen scored eight points apiece for the Wolverines (9-5, 6-5). Brock Fisher chipped in six points and five rebounds, while Austin Vaughn had four points and a team-leading eight boards.
Travis Havel scored 19 points to pace Don Bosco (6-8, 4-6), while Connor Weber added 13 in the loss.
