PREP WRESTLING: Bobcats plagued by narrow defeats

ANKENY – The Marshalltown wrestling team opened the Ankeny Duals with a victory over the hosts, but a series of narrow defeats followed the Bobcats the rest of their stay on Saturday.

MHS downed the Hawks 42-24 to start the day, but four rounds of losses came next. The Bobcats were dropped by Ottumwa (33-32), Class 3A No. 13 Sioux City North (45-25), Oskaloosa (32-29) and Spencer (42-28).

A trio of Marshalltown wrestlers went undefeated for the day, with Josh Edel (160 pounds), 10th-ranked Derek Mann (170) and Justus Bjelland (195) all going 5-0. Edel recorded three pins while Mann and Bjelland both posted two pinfall wins for the Bobcats.

Mitch O’Hare (132), Anthony Fleck (145), Peyton Williams (152), Ben Rebik (182) and John Remsler (220) each went 3-2 on the day. Remsler, a freshman, had pins in the Bobcats’ first two duals.

Jordan Paone went 2-3 at 138 with both wins coming by fall, and Reese Hageman (126) was 2-3 with a pin.

Marshalltown resumes action with a make-up dual on Tuesday at 3A No. 14 Mason City, and the Central Iowa Conference meet is Friday at Southeast Polk starting at 3:30 p.m.

Trojans fifth at Rich Gray Classic

TRURO – The West Marshall wrestling team had nine placewinners, including 170-pound champion Dale Hilleman, on its way to a fifth-place finish at the Rich Gray Classic hosted Saturday by Interstate 35 High School.

Hilleman, ranked third in Class 1A, was one of two finalists for the Trojans. Tenth-ranked Cole Needham made it to the 113 title bout before being edged 9-8 by sixth-ranked Ryan Cale from Cardinal. Both had a pair of pins prior to reaching the finals. Hilleman topped No. 5 Dillon Pigsley of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, 3-1.

Chad Berrey scored third place at 132, while Ross Randall (106), Cooper White (126) and Alex Schaper (285) each finished fourth. Jared Johnson (152) and Tyler Casady (220) both placed fifth while Austin Grimm (120) claimed sixth.

Class 2A No. 2-ranked Albia won the tournament with 212 team points, followed by Norwalk (179), 1A No. 2 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (175.5), Central Springs (169.5) and West Marshall (151). Host I-35 was sixth (120) in the 16-team field.

West Marshall hosts AGWSR and GRNT-GC in an NICL triangular on Tuesday night in State Center.

Mustangs fifth at own duals

LE GRAND – A pair of 5-0 performances helped the East Marshall/GMG wrestling team to a 3-2 showing and a fifth-place finish at the Mustang Duals on Saturday.

EM/GMG emerged third from a potent pool and went on to take the consolation title. The Mustangs went 1-2 in pool play with a win over Benton Community (39-24) following losses to Class 2A No. 16 Washington (52-24) and No. 10 Independence (60-18). In brackted action, EM/GMG toppled Des Moines Lincoln (51-15) and Dyersville Beckman (48-24).

Former ranked wrestlers Nick Meling (106 pounds) and Zach Underhill (126) both went 5-0 to lead the Mustangs. Underhill had four wins by fall and Meling posted three pins with a technical fall.

Devon Yilek (152) and Jared Bowman (220) both went 4-1. Bowman won twice by pin while Yilek had three pins and a 9-7 overtime decision over Class 3A No. 10-ranked Nate Luna of Des Moines Lincoln.

Talon Roseland (170) and Lane Walton (182) both posted three wins on the day, while Nick Long (160) was 2-1 in limited action.

The Mustangs host 1A No. 16 Dike-New Hartford in an NICL dual meet on Tuesday night in Le Grand.

Four champs for MHS JV

The Marshalltown junior varsity wrestling team crowned four champions at its own 10-team invitational on Saturday at the Roundhouse.

Paden Himes, Seth Heinrichs, Austin Baker and Jose Zaragoza each went 3-0 to claim first place in their respective brackets, while Josh Sowers scored second place with a 2-1 record for the Bobcats.
