GIRLS HOOPS: Royals secure season sweep of Don Bosco

COLO – Colo-NESCO junior Melanie Van Loon scored a career-high 14 points and the Royals held Don Bosco scoreless in the opening quarter of their 58-36 rout of the Dons in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.

The Class 1A No. 4 Royals ran out to a 21-0 lead after the opening period and put the Dons away with a 38-9 halftime advantage.

Van Loon made her career-best four 3-pointers in the win while contributing four assists. Caitlyn Riese also scored 14 points while Shayla Dean posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 steals to go with five assists. Madison Farren added nine points for the Royals (16-1, 12-1), who won their fifth straight.

Don Bosco (7-11, 5-9) was led by Kaitlyn McGarvey and Erin McFadden with 10 points apiece.

East Marshall 53, Grundy Center 38

GRUNDY CENTER – The Mustangs outscored Grundy Center 37-10 in the second half to snap a five-game-losing streak with a 53-38 win over the host Spartans in NICL West Division play.

Four players scored in double figures for East Marshall (5-13, 5-7), which trailed 28-18 at the half to a Grundy Center team it had lost to in overtime in their first meeting.

Meriel Leavy and Taylor Fricke led the Mustangs with 13 points apiece, with Leavy snaring seven rebounds. Mariah Fritz made a pair of 3-pointers en route to 11 points, while Ashley Allen posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.

Katie Lindeman led Grundy Center (9-8, 5-7) with 12 points, but the Spartans went scoreless for the final four minutes of the game. Stephanie Faust added 10 points and Jessica Ackerson added eight. Mathews led the Spartans with seven rebounds.

North Tama 54, Meskwaki 31

TRAER – Josie Youel scored a game-high 17 points to lead North Tama to a 54-31 win over Meskwaki in an Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.

Sam Zobel added 15 points and Anna Kvidera had 11 more for the Redhawks (11-6, 10-4), who led 33-12 at the half.

Deah Moore scored more than half of her team’s points for Meskwaki (6-10, 3-9), leading the way with 16.

GMG 44, Waterloo Christian 34

WATERLOO – Olivia Barritt continued her scoring tear and the Wolverines won again, defeating Waterloo Christian 44-34 in Iowa Star Conference action.

Barritt led GMG with 17 points as the team picked up its fourth win in its last five games. The junior forward is averaging 17.6 points per game in that span.

Caitlin Appelgate chipped in eight points and Josie Claassen seven for the Wolverines (5-12, 4-9), who shot 17-of-23 from the free-throw line.

Kaitlin Armbrecht led Waterloo Christian (7-9, 5-7) with 14 points.


Hudson 63, South Hardin 29

HUDSON – Class 2A No. 6 Hudson handled South Hardin, 63-29, in a cross-NICL contest Thursday.

Lindsey Koch and Casey Miles both scored 15 points for Hudson (15-1).

Kayla Prosser led the Tigers (11-4) with nine points, while Megan Carr scored five.
